At its recent Snapdragon Summit, Qualcomm shifted the conversation away from today’s 5G rollouts and toward something much bigger: the dawn of 6G. While we’re still figuring out the full potential of 5G networks—powering faster downloads, smoother streaming, and more connected devices—Qualcomm is already preparing for what comes next.

The company revealed that by 2028, we may begin to see pre-commercial 6G devices. These won’t be sleek phones you can buy off a shelf, but instead testbeds for validating the groundbreaking new architectures that 6G demands. Qualcomm’s vision is ambitious: networks that go beyond moving data quickly to actually thinking, sensing, and adapting in real time.

One of the key innovations they outlined involves smart edge-cloud systems. Rather than relying solely on centralized servers, 6G networks would bring intelligence closer to the devices themselves, blending AI, advanced sensors, and perception technologies into the network’s DNA. The result? A system capable not just of responding to commands, but of anticipating needs—transforming industries like healthcare (real-time remote surgery), transportation (autonomous vehicles that talk to infrastructure), and entertainment (fully immersive, lag-free AR/VR worlds).

While consumer-ready 6G is still years away, Qualcomm’s announcement matters now. These early prototypes will help establish global standards, guide regulators, and spark innovation across hardware and software. If 5G was about speed and scale, 6G will be about intelligence and foresight. It’s not just the next G—it’s the next leap in how humans and machines interact.
