Practice Patience — It's a Process
Share
Joining a Black sorority within the Divine Nine is not like joining any other student organization. It’s not a matter of simply signing up or submitting an application with a resume and a dream. It is a deliberate, sacred process rooted in history, legacy, and community. And because of that, it requires something that many young women struggle to cultivate: patience.
Unlike clubs or honor societies that have open enrollments and rapid response systems, sorority membership is often gated by specific intake windows, chapter discretion, academic standing, and—most importantly—readiness. That means the timing might not match your schedule or expectations. You may attend an informational session only to wait a semester, a year, or longer for another opportunity to arise. And that's okay.
Instead of becoming discouraged, use the waiting period wisely. This is a chance to build your campus presence, volunteer consistently, and engage with the organization’s values in visible, genuine ways. Read up on the founders. Study their mission. Support the chapter’s public events.
More than anything, this is a time to reflect. Ask yourself: Why do I want to join? How can I grow while I wait? Patience isn’t passive. It’s active preparation.
When the time is right, your consistency, discipline, and respect for the process will speak louder than any public declaration ever could. And you won’t just be ready to join—you’ll be ready to contribute.
